Cultural Appropriation: Kim Lee Uses Black Culture

Viewers of the Netflix original reality series, Bling Empire, have noticed the Black American accent (blaccent) Kim Lee uses in a few scenes. It seems most apparent when Kim is angry.

  • She argued with Kevin at the Mid-Autumn Festival. (S1 E3 «What’s in Anna’s Shower?»)
  • Kim shared some enraged statements while the group was bowling. (S1 E4 «Beverly Hills Heartbreak»)

Multiple fans have commented their dislike for Kim’s comfort and use of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) throughout the series. Living in Los Angeles and working in the music industry does not permit use of Black culture for capital gain or popularity.

However, as a this is a Black-owned blog and I am a Black writer, I disagree that Kim Lee used a blaccent or AAVE intermittently throughout Bling Empire. To my ears, it sounds like her accent can be more accurately described as urban, specifically Angeleno. Kim sounds more like a Los Angeles native than a Black impersonator.

There are more egregious examples of Kim Lee using Black culture. She has posted multiple Instagram pictures of her wearing popular Black hairstyles.

The following picture features a caption about «light skin» and «baby hairs.»

Kim Lee has also been described as a Kylie Jenner look-alike. Listen to our reviews of Bling Empire on .
